The National Marfan Foundation joins the larger public health community in applauding the Supreme Court's decision upholding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (healthcare reform) as constitutional.
The Supreme Court's action ensures that healthcare reform will continue to be implemented, particularly key patient care provisions such as coverage for pre-existing conditions and the elimination of restrictions on insurance benefits. The reforms initiated through the healthcare reform law will help millions of Americans, including many affected by Marfan Syndrome and related connective tissue disorders. By improving access to quality healthcare for individuals affected by chronic, costly, and difficult to treat conditions, healthcare reform will help ensure that patients spend less time fighting for services they need and more time working with healthcare professionals to fight their illness.
It is important to remember that the Supreme Court's decision on healthcare reform does not represent an end, but a beginning. While we have taken an important step, our country's healthcare system is far from perfect and will require additional reforms before it properly serves all Americans and the entire Marfan community. Moving forward, the National Marfan Foundation will continue to work with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to advance legislative and public policy efforts which improve the health and wellness for all who are affected by Marfan Syndrome and related connective tissue disorders.
