The NMF has been and continues to be involved in convening and sponsoring symposia on Marfan syndrome along with the International Federation of Marfan Syndrome Organizations (IFMSO). These symposia have provided a common meeting ground for basic scientists, applied scientists, and clinicians to better understand the molecular etiology of the Marfan syndrome, the biochemical abnormalities produced by the underlying mutations in connective tissue genes, the clinical consequences of these mutations, the medical and surgical management and the effects of these interventions on natural history.  These meetings have been held with several year intervals to permit sufficient progress to warrant assessment of the impact of the advances. The following is a list of the symposia held to date:

  • 1st International Symposium - Baltimore, Maryland, USA, 1988
  • 2nd International Symposium - San Francisco, California, USA, 1992
  • 3rd International Symposium - Berlin, Germany, 1994
  • 4th International Symposium - Davos, Switzerland, 1996
  • 5th International Symposium - Helsinki, Finland, 1998
  • 6th International Symposium - Seattle Washington, USA, 2001
  • 7th International Symposium - Ghent, Belgium, 2005
  • 8th International Symposium - Warrenton, VA, USA 2010

In addition to the seven International symposia the NMF has convened two state-of-the-art Banbury Research meetings in 1991 and 1998. Results of these research meetings include important findings include discovering the gene that causes Marfan syndrome,  the developement of directives to revise diagnostic criteria, and the developement of research agendas.
